About

The West Metro Active Transportation Alliance was established in 2025 as a group of advocates interested in collaborating across city lines to achieve better outcomes on behalf of non-drivers in the Western portion of the Minneapolis and St. Paul Metropolitan area.

Our Mission and Vision

WMATA champions multi-modal transportation by advocating for an integrated network of safe accessible active transportation infrastructure and robust public transit. We work across the West Metro to challenge car dependency, prioritize sustainable choices, and ensure safe, equitable mobility options for all residents, especially children, the elderly, and non-drivers.

We envision a West Metro where walking, cycling, and public transit are the most convenient and safe transportation choices for all people.

Our Core Goals

Core Goal 1: Complete and Safe Multi-Modal Network

  • Aim: Champion the timely implementation of a protected, integrated, and high-quality multi-modal network usable by all ages and abilities.

Core Goal 2: Normalization and Cultural Prioritization of Sustainable Travel For all ages and abilities

  • Aim: The West Metro is a place where active transportation, including walking, biking, rolling, and transit, are considered normal, routine, and preferred for most residents, workers, and visitors.
  • Aim: To ensure that all network development and advocacy efforts explicitly address mobility gaps and prioritize the needs of non-drivers, including children, seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income residents who lack access to a private vehicle.

Core Goal 3:  Active transportation is a key priority for west metro municipal and regional government

  • Aim: To influence regional and municipal policy, zoning, and funding decisions to support sustainable urbanist principles, including comprehensive investments in active transportation networks, high quality public transit and equitable, pedestrian and transit-oriented development.
