Welcome to WMATA‘s October Newsletter 2026

The West Metro Active Transportation Alliance (WMATA), pronounced Wuh-Mat-Tuh, is organizing to challenge car dependency, prioritize sustainable choices, and ensure safe, equitable mobility options in the Twin Cities West Metro. We send these newsletters out monthly to help keep you up to date on what we’ve been doing and what’s coming up in WMATA events and West Metro transportation advocacy in general.

1. What We’ve Been Up To

Since our last newsletter we’ve…

● We enjoyed our biggest social yet at Rosland Park in Edina, we hosted our Launch Party, and we celebrated Metro Transit announcing June 12 as the opening date for the long overdue Green Line Extension.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended and helped make our launch party a success!

2. What’s Coming Up

WMATA Events:

We put a lot of effort into these big events in September and early October, so we are taking a break for the rest of October and returning with our November social on November 11th.

We’ll be watching Changing Lanes at Freewheel Minnetonka starting at 7:15 PM. Find out more information via our website or by emailing info@westmet.org.
Despite our little break, we will be meeting virtually on October 14th to debrief the launch party and chat about what comes next. All are welcome at this meeting!

We also may be planning something for Halloween, but you’ll need to keep an eye on our socials for more info.

Additional Events:

– On October 21st, our very own WMATA President Sylvie Hyman will be leading a ride to Nightmare on Our Streets, Our Streets’ annual, volunteer hosted, fundraiser.
– The ride will meet under the Hennepin Ave bridge on the Greenway at 5:15 PM, rolling by 5:30 PM to make it to Dual Citizen around 6 PM.  Save the date!

– November 21st is the 10th Annual Minnetonka #Cranksgiving
– Visit 5 Minnetonka & Hopkins grocery stores (and/or Target, Petco, etc) to buy foodstuffs or other needed items to donate to ICA Food Shelf. All by bike!
– Traditional loop (~21 miles) starts & ends at Unmapped Brewing (14625 Excelsior Blvd, Minnetonka, MN 55345) and rolls out at 9:30 am. Other, shorter options available, and/or you can join where it makes sense for you.

More opportunities are popping up all the time. The best way to stay in the know is by joining our discord server (more info below)! You can also check our calendar for new events that come up after this newsletter is sent.

3. Check Out the WMATA Member Spotlight

Member Don Do is our featured member on Sep 28, 2026

Every week or so (with a 2 week hiatus to start October) we are posting on our website and socials about the people who make WMATA happen. If your are interested in being featured please email willcoughlin@gmail.com with a short bio and a few photos. Check out our previous member spotlights for inspiration.

4. How to Get Involved

Join a working group! WMATA needs your help to continue our fight for safer streets and better transit in the West Metro. While donations are great, they do not organize our social events and meetings, build relationships with our communities and local leaders, or launch campaigns to slow traffic and increase transit frequency and walkability in the West Metro. The best way to support our work right now is to jump into a working group and help us plan events, manage our discord server, calendar, social media, and send newsletters like this one!

Join our discord server: Discord is where WMATA members do most of our communications and organize events. If you plan to contribute to WMATA’s work please consider joining. You can request assistance with discord by emailing info@westmet.org. This link expires on 11/10/26. Reply to this email or send an email to info@westmet.org to request a new link. If you are already in discord, but you only have access to the welcome and rules and introductions channels, you may need to post an introduction and/or update your server name to comply with the rules.

Become a WMATA Member! If you are already a BikeMN member, click here to add WMATA as your chapter.
– Not a BikeMN member, click here and make sure WMATA or Access Hopkins is selected at the bottom of the form.
